Battle of Sound (1658)

NB: Discussion devoted to the Anglo-Dutch Wars at sea, including ships, battles, and persons by James C. Bender. Regularly updated.

This is a listing of the Dutch fleet that fought at the Battle of the Sound. They defeated a larger Swedish fleet commanded by Karl Gustaf Wrangel. The main Dutch loss in the battle was Witte de With, and his flagship Brederode. That loss occurred because the Brederode had run aground in unfamiliar waters. The Swedes raked the ship unmercifully for two hours. Witte de With was killed, and the Brederode was surrendered, only to sink shortly afterwards. The Swedes saved Witte de With's body and presented it to Admiral van Wassenaer for transport home for a hero's funeral. Another loss was Pieter Florissen, who was killed, although his ship survived. The Dutch were able to run their armed transports South to relieve the besieged Danish capital, Copenhagen, and enable them to survive.
